Insulation has now become an integral part for every architect, builder, industrial consultant, engineer or planner. As an essential part of plant and building construction, appropriate application has produced significant energy conservation, waste prevention and thereby financial savings. Rising costs of energy and capital has made insulation very important for containing costs and a universally applicable solution for the conservation of energy and therefore contributing to environmental protection.

An overview of the functions of insulation:

Heat loss reduction, based on the principle of optimum economic insulation thickness

Personal protection, by limiting the surface temperature of the jacket or the covering

Protection of human life and installations in case of fire
  Reduction of noise levels
Controlling temperatures to preserve process conditions or to prevent excess temperature drops
Preventing condensation inside pipes and ducts
Preventing condensation outside pipes and ducts
Optimization of the use of heat tracers
Contributes to lower the CFC emission

The Specific Applications of Rockwool

Some of the major parameters while evaluating any insulation product and the key attributes to be observed are given below:

Condensation: The vapour resistance of Rockwool is negligible for vapor diffusion through a structure. Compared to other building materials it is usually considered as zero. This is a great advantage as the moisture in a new building or construction (particularly cold storages) can easily pass through the layers of insulation as water vapor and cool without condensing.

Chemical Composition : Rockwool fibres are inorganic. Their composition is basaltic with refractory oxide components deliberately increased to improve and enhance stability at higher temperatures. The products are compatible with all other forms of material with which they are likely to come in contact within normal industrial and building applications.

Thermal Efficiency: Rockwool products have extremely low conductivity (K) values even at lower densities because of their homogeneous structure.

Noise Control: The products have excellent sound absorption capabilities preventing irritating noise pollution, by controlling it either at the source, along the path from source to receiver or at the receiver's end.

Handling and Application: Rockwool is lightweight flexible and easy to handle. The sizes are precise and a wide assortment of standard specifications are available. The products are not affected by wathering and decomposition and are consequently hygienic and have a long service life.

Fire Resistance: This is non-combustible and the insulation properties that enable it to endure high termperatures and its high melting point gives it further fire resistance. This makes it an excellent fireproofing material
